A Super-Short Summary of New Perspectivism

Systematics III by Douglas Kelly of Reformed Theological Seminary contains an excellent summary and critique of New Perspectivism ("NPism," "New Perspective on Paul"). I've condensed the material as best as possible without skewing the facts or over-simplifying. Hopefully some will find this helpful who are unfamiliar with the debate.

? Summary of NPism

o Davies (post-WWII) pointed out that Judaism of Paul's day was not legalistic works-righteousness. EP Sanders developed along these lines as well, saying there is a covenantal scheme to justification. People/Jews do works to stay in covenant community, not get in. "Righteousness" is term for maintenance status.

o Dunn, NT Wright, followed closely to Sanders' work.

? "works of law" (Rom. 3-5) = food laws, circumcision, Sabbath keeping, etc. They are "badges" (Dunn)," "identity markers."

? "Justification...is not a matter of how someone enters the community of the true people of God, but of how you tell who belongs to that community...it wasn't so much about soteriology as about ecclesiology." Wright, What Saint Paul Really Said, 119

? Justification as imputation and forensic is "a cold piece of business" (110).

o Dunn essentially denies imputation of Adam's sin to human race (Theology of Paul, 94-97)

? Critique

o "Works of law" are not so limited; there was indeed legalistic works-righteousness in Paul's day

? Universal condemnation is brought by law, Rom. 1-2

? Christ dealt with legalism much more harshly (Matt. 5:19, 20)

? No covenant boundary markers gives comfort to those whose adherence to circumcision etc. is divinely judged to be external and not internal. (John 8, etc.)

o Justification as Entry to Covenant Salvation

? Rom. 1-4 progresses from problem of sin to solution of salvation (justification) in Christ.

? So the question is how one enters (hence example of Abraham's faith in context).

? Rom 5:9, "being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him."
